THE RED-LEGGED DEVILS
In 1861, the 14th Brooklyn new york state of militia was formed in response to the outbreak of the Civil War. The 14th Brooklyn was one of the first units to be mustered into service, and saw action in some of the war’s most important battles, including the Battle of Gettysburg. Today, the 14th Brooklyn is still an active unit, serving as a reserve force for the New York National Guard.
The 14th Brooklyn Regiment was one of the first to arrive on the Gettysburg Battlefield. The regiment fought bravely against overwhelming odds but was ultimately forced to retreat.
